How to Set Up Alerts in Social Listening

A reference guide to the seven alert types in Social Listening, Trending, Negative Posts, New Post, Influencer, Verified User, High Volume Reach, and Viral, and when to use each.

Alerts notify you in real time when unusual activity is detected in your monitored conversations. They automatically detect significant changes in conversation volume, sentiment, engagement, and influencer activity, so teams can respond to emerging issues without continuously watching dashboards.

How Alerts Work

Alerts compare recent activity, such as the last hour, against baseline averages from historical data, such as the previous 24 hours or 7 days. When activity crosses defined thresholds, a notification is generated and delivered to the configured recipients.

Alert Types

Seven alert types are available, each targeting a different activity pattern.

Trending Alert: triggered when conversation volume in the last hour exceeds the average of the previous 24 hours.

Negative Posts Alert: triggered when negative posts spike compared to the 24-hour average. This is the primary alert for early reputation risk detection.

New Post Alert: triggered when a new post is detected within the monitored conversations.

Influencer Alert: triggered when a user with a high follower count publishes a new post related to your monitored topics.

Verified User Alert: triggered when a verified user publishes a new post related to your monitored topics.

High Volume Reach Alert: triggered when post reach spikes compared to the hourly average of the last 24 hours.

Viral Alert: triggered when post interactions significantly exceed the average of the last 7 days.

When to Use Alerts

Alerts are most effective for detecting sudden spikes in conversation activity that may signal a developing issue, identifying potential reputation risks through sentiment shifts before they escalate, and tracking high-impact or viral content as it emerges so teams can respond while the conversation is still active.

Frequently asked questions

How does Lucidya determine when something is unusual?

The platform compares recent activity against baseline averages from historical data. When current activity exceeds the baseline by a defined threshold, an alert is triggered.

Which alert type is best for reputation monitoring?

The Negative Posts Alert is the most directly relevant for reputation risk. It specifically monitors for spikes in negative content compared to your baseline. The Viral Alert and High Volume Reach Alert are also useful for catching content that is gaining traction quickly.

Can I configure how alerts are delivered?

Yes. Alert delivery settings including notification recipients and email frequency are configured during alert setup. See How to Set Up X Top Trends Alerts in Social Listening for an example of the alert configuration flow.

How quickly are alerts delivered after activity is detected?

Alerts are generated in real time based on the comparison between current and baseline activity. Delivery timing depends on the alert type and the notification settings configured.
